Politics should never threaten someone's access to a basic need like food - PERIOD.
As you've heard, beginning November 1st, SNAP benefits will be delayed by the federal shutdown and this will leave many Tahoe/Truckee locals without critical support to put food on the table. Sierra Community House is already hearing from families who don’t know where their next meal will come from—and expects that number to rise sharply.
As the only food pantry in our region, SHC is currently serving over 700 families a week and is mobilizing every resource they have to bridge this gap. They anticipate a 30% minimum increase in demand, with this loss of benefits pushing even more families to the edge.
I know we are all experiencing basics like food and utilities getting more and more expensive. With no expectation of what is an appropriate amount, I'm inviting you to help support the food pantry at this critical time. Here's a link to how to help in other ways if that's preferable.
